Considered to be the best tree-form Serviceberry, Allegheny Serviceberry is an easy-to-grow, adaptable tree that shouldn't be lacking in any garden or wild area.  Allegheny serviceberry is a common tree of the Northeast, ranging from Minnesota to Maine, south to Indiana and Delaware, with populations in the Southern Appalachians extending into Tennessee, the Carolinas, and Georgia.  Pollinators are attracted to the brilliant white blooms in Early Spring, often the first blooms of any tree in the landscape.  Flowers are followed by clusters of sweet, blue-black berries in early summer, around the same time strawberries begin to ripen.

Uses

Allegheny serviceberry is a highly useful small tree.  The pure-white blooms are the earliest of any native tree, appearing as early as the end of March in mild years.  Allegheny serviceberry fruit is edible and delicious, with a sweet apple-blueberry taste.  The berries start out red, turning inky blue when fully ripe, staining any surface they fall onto.  Use care when planting these near sidewalks!  The trees have a pleasant form in the summer, and turn brilliant shades of orange and red in the fall.  Serviceberry is very shade tolerant, though flowering and fall color are best in full sun.

Cultivation

Serviceberry grows best in (what else?) moist, well-drained soil, though it will grow in just about anything it can put its roots into and pull moisture from.  Equally at home in sun or shade, allegheny serviceberry is an excellent small tree for meadow gardens, bird gardens, woodlands and conservation plantings.  It is best to avoid excessively dry and windy sites, though allegheny serviceberry is used extensively in commercial parking lot plantings here in Indiana with fairly decent success.  As with most Northeastern trees, deep watering during excessive drought will greatly increase long-term survival.

We grow Allegheny Serviceberry in our 1-Quart SuperPlug fabric containers, which offer quick rooting, establishment and accelerated growth compared to standard or bareroot stock.  Quart fabric pots measure 4" Diameter x 5" tall.  These Allegheny Serviceberry trees are 24-36 inches tall, and should begin blooming within 2-3 years from planting.
