Giant joe pye weed is a very tall wildflower, growing 4 to 7 feet tall in rich soils. Its mauve flower plumes are a striking presence in late summer, attracting all manner of butterflies and bees.
Giant Joe-Pye Weed is an excellent perennial to include at the back of a larger border; the large size makes it somewhat difficult to integrate in small gardens. Joe-Pye Weed can be used both in traditional cottage gardens and in more naturalistic restoration plantings.
A few species of moths use giant joe-pye weed as their larval host, and the flowers produce an abundance of nectar for butterflies and bees. The leaves are very bitter, and browsing animals tend to avoid this species making it an excellent garden perennial in areas of the east where deer populations are high.
