Hollow-stem Joe Pye Weed (Also called Giant Joe Pye) is a very attractive wildflower of meadows in Eastern North America.  Ranging from Missouri to Maine, south to Texas and Florida, giant joe pye weed is most common in the rolling piedmont east of the Appalachians.

Giant joe pye weed is a very tall wildflower, growing 4 to 7 feet tall in rich soils.  Its mauve flower plumes are a striking presence in late summer, attracting all manner of butterflies and bees.

Uses

Giant Joe-Pye Weed is an excellent perennial to include at the back of a larger border; the large size makes it somewhat difficult to integrate in small gardens.  Joe-Pye Weed can be used both in traditional cottage gardens and in more naturalistic restoration plantings.

A few species of moths use giant joe-pye weed as their larval host, and the flowers produce an abundance of nectar for butterflies and bees.  The leaves are very bitter, and browsing animals tend to avoid this species making it an excellent garden perennial in areas of the east where deer populations are high.

How to Grow Giant Joe-Pye Weed

Giant Joe-Pye Weed is very easy to grow, and very accommodating as long as its need for moist soil can be met.  In the wild, Joe-Pye Weed is most often found at pond edges and wet meadows, where it towers above the other plants.

Space Joe-Pye Weed 36 inches apart - This species can take up a lot of space as it matures, so be sure to give it enough room.
