Indian grass, an important component of grasslands over most of North America, is an excellent, useful priarie grass.  Ranging from Quebec to Saskatchewan and from Maine to Wyoming, south to Arizona, Texas, Mexico and Florida, Indian grass is one of the most widespread prairie grasses in North America.  Indian grass is a warm-season grass that grows from 4-7 feet tall, providing excellent shelter and food for priarie animals.  Songbirds feed on the seeds and use the clumps as nest sites, and the grass is eaten by any grazing mammals.

Uses

Use indian grass as a backdrop for the perennial garden or as a key grass in prairie and meadow plantings.  The clumps get rather tall, and are best used in more naturalized situations.  Do not plant with weaker-growing perennials, as indian grass is highly competitive.  If you have a weedy, open patch of land that is never mowed, plant indian grass and enjoy the wildlife it attracts!

Cultivation/ Growing Information

Indian grass is remarkably easy to grow - Plant the plugs, water them in well, and stand back!

As is evidenced by its wide range, Indian grass is very tolerant of poorer-than-average conditions, although growth will be best on neutral, moist loam soils.  Poorer soils will cause the grass to grow less tall (Which may be advantageous depending on the desired look), whereas the higher height ranges can be expected on better soils.  Space the plugs 2 feet apart in prepared soil and water thoroughly.

Our plugs are 2.25" rootmaker plugs, started this season - The Rootmaker plugs offer much quicker establishment due to root pruning than standard plugs.  You can expect the plants to be thoroughly established after 2 weeks if moisture isn't lacking!  Rootmaker plugs are perfect for less accessible areas because of this feature.
