Native to prairies and meadows of Eastern North America, Little bluestem is a distinctive, medium-height native grass. A good plant for drier upland soils, Little Bluestem is very drought tolerant and hardy. The new leaves emerge a bluish-green, growing quickly to full height and blooming in mid-Summer. The plants mature in Autumn to a vibrant, russet tone that lasts through most of the winter. The plants are very wildlife-friendly, offering seed and nest sites for meadow and prairie birds.
Little bluestem is easy to grow in medium to dry soils. The plants are an excellent, medium-height grass for smaller gardens and look excellent with Purple Coneflower, Bee Balm, Yellow Coneflower, Liatris and Wild Quinine.
Our plants come as 2.25" Rootmaker plugs, which establish very quickly - Full-sized plants can be achieved by the second season with good weed control and moisture management after planting.
