A robust and fast-growing native prairie and meadow grass, Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is an excellent screening and habitat improving grass. Clumps grow 4 to 6 feet tall, with dense root systems that extend several feet into the ground, breaking up hardpans and heavy clay with ease. Established switchgrass clumps can absorb several inches of rain in 1 hour, making it an excellent grass for rain gardens and riparian buffer strips.
Switchgrass is somewhat late to emerge, typically sprouting in May. Clumps grow quickly to size, setting huge quantities of seed valued by quail, songbirds and small mammals. The clumps turn a lovely butter yellow in the fall, standing decoratively all winter as they swish in the wind.
Our Switchgrass plugs will root quickly, becoming full sized clumps by the second growing season. Plant 2 to 3 feet apart in rich, moist soil, water well, and stand back!
