Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah' (Shenandoah Switchgrass) - Plugs$7.98 $12.98 (You save $5.00)
Introduced by Dr. Hans Simon from Germany, 'Shenandoah' switch grass was selected as a seedling of the older cultivar 'Haense Herms'. 'Shenandoah' offers a more compact and upright form than 'Haense Herms', with deeper red late summer color, as well.
Switch grass is a widely adaptable native grass, and like many other native North American plants, has been used in Europe long before native cultivars became popular here in the U.S.
Because of its adaptability and vigor, 'Shenandoah' switch grass has become a mainstay for commercial landscaping in the Midwest.
'Shenandoah' switch grass tolerates the heavy clay soils that are so predominant, able to take both the baking dry periods and the long, wet periods that make most plants just a distant memory in the garden.
'Shenandoah' switchgrass is a very sturdy, upright cultivar - It won't fall over like some varieties of switchgrass. The sturdy clumps make excellent all-season cover and food source for rabbits and other small mammals, as well as songbirds who feed on the dropped seed between the clumps.
How to Grow Shenandoah Switch Grass
Use 'Shenandoah' switch grass as an accent grass in traditional borders, or as a mass planting for larger landscaped areas. 'Shenandoah' switch grass makes a striking mass, with its late season red color.
'Shenandoah' switch grass grows about 3-4 feet tall, with a spread of about 18-36 inches. For a solid mass, plant 18 inches apart; for distinct clumps plant at least 36 inches apart. Switch grass is very tough and adaptable, and will grow in just about any kind of soil regardless of moisture, texture and PH.
Our Shenandoah Switch Grass quart SuperPlug™ pots will establish quickly. Plant the soft fabric pot directly in the ground for best results; plants will reach full size after 1 growing season.
