Geranium maculatum (Wild Geranium) - 1 Qt Super Plugs

$9.98

Wild geranium is a very garden-worthy native, growing in mesic woods across eastern North America from Quebec to Manitoba, south to Oklahoma, Louisiana and Florida, and back up the Atlantic Coast.  Wild geranium sports clean, attractive foliage, with clusters of flowers that vary from purple to white; the typical variety shows pink flowers.

Wild geranium blooms a little later than the main rush of spring ephemerals, usually in full bloom by early May.  Flowering lasts for several weeks, as not all the flower buds open at once.  Wild Geranium makes a nice groundcover the rest of the year in moist soils, but it does tend to go dormant early if the soil dries out in the summer.

Uses

Wild Geranium is a good early-season nectar source for the first butterflies; it also provides nectar and pollen for many different species of native bees.  Several moths use Wild Geranium as a food source for their caterpillars, and deer will sometimes eat the leaves and flower buds.

In the garden, Wild Geranium makes for attractive mass plantings.  It does tend to spread by seed in good conditions, but it's fairly easy to pull out the seedlings and move them around as necessary.  The cheerful pink flowers make a good counterpoint for the yellow flowers of celandine poppies (Stylophorum diphyllum), and the plants are well matched in vigor to the same.

How to Grow Wild Geranium

Use Wild Geranium in woodland and edge areas - In sunnier spots at the edge of the woods, the plants flower profusely but have more of a tendency to go dormant in the summer.  Wild geranium is good for interplanting among shrubs and spring ephemerals, as it usually makes a nice groundcover in the summer once the ephemerals have gone dormant.

Wild Geranium prefers moist woodland soil with a neutral PH - If you have acidic soil, a dusting of lime will help their overall vigor.

Our Wild Geranium Quart SuperPlug™ pots will establish quickly.  Plant in Autumn for blooms the following Spring; Not all may bloom the same year if planted in spring.
